Grand Haven lighthouse getting repairs
GRAND HAVEN, MI – Grand Haven’s iconic lighthouse will be open for tours Thursday as efforts to preserve the historic structure continue.
The outer south pier lighthouse, also known as the Fog House, will be open for tours from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 1.
Tax-deductible donations will be accepted and will go toward the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy’s ongoing preservation efforts.
The open house and tours are weather dependent and will be rescheduled if pier conditions are too dangerous.
Recent repairs to the lighthouse, costing $75,000, were made to its lantern room, including replacement of the lantern room floor, repairs to the exterior decking, replacement of exterior railing, repairs to the exterior door, and sealing and repainting of the interior and exterior
Additional exterior renovations will be paid for with a $60,000 grant funded by purchases of lighthouse license plates and a $76,409 grant match raised through the conservancy’s efforts. Those renovations will include repair of the concrete wall, decking and stairs; installation of new metal flashing; and repainting.
The work is part of ongoing refurbishment of the lighthouse, plans for which include restoration of living quarters to how they looked when lighthouse keepers lived there and to open the structure as a museum. The interior includes living quarters and machinery.
The red wooden lighthouse attached to the square-shaped living quarters was built in the 1870s. It is at the far end of the city’s pier and recently refurbished catwalk. There also is a second cast iron “inner” lighthouse located in the middle of the pier.
